Ferrara Begins Installation of EPA2010 Maxxforce® 13 Engines in Inferno® and Igniter® Custom Fire Chassis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., March 22, 2011 – Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Inc., America’s premier custom fire apparatus manufacturer, has begun installing EPA2010-compliant MaxxForce® 13 diesel engines in its Inferno® and Igniter® heavy-duty custom fire chassis. MaxxForce engines are designed, engineered and built by Navistar Engine Group.

Ferrara President/CEO Chris Ferrara was enthusiastic in announcing the news to dealers and customers ahead of the FDIC conference and exhibition in Indianapolis. “Our company is known as a custom builder of high quality, heavy duty fire apparatus, and MaxxForce engines have a similar, proven record of quality and performance,” Ferrara said. “The fact that MaxxForce 13 delivers peak torque at a low 1,000 RPM is particularly well-suited to the fire industry.”

At FDIC, Ferrara will display a 2011 Inferno® custom fire truck powered by the MaxxForce 13 at outdoor booth #15645 on South Street, between the show’s two conference centers.
The MaxxForce 13 produces 475 horsepower and 1,700 ft-lb torque, making it an excellent selection for custom pumper, tanker, aerial and heavy rescue apparatus. The industry’s best low-end torque is especially critical to emergency rescue operations where every second counts.

“Fire departments across the country have come to rely on our engines in nearly 60 percent of the commercial fire apparatus market,” said Eric Tech, president, Navistar Engine Group. “Now, buyers of Ferrara custom apparatus have the option to put MaxxForce power to work in their fleet.”

EPA 2010-compliant MaxxForce engines use Navistar’s advanced in-cylinder emissions technology that does not require liquid urea. As a result, they provide Ferrara customers with significant “no hassle” operational advantages over liquid-urea SCR-equipped apparatus. These include no additional wheelbase length to accommodate additional tanks, no secondary operating fluid to add (urea), no additional driver training, and ease of maintenance.

In addition to Ferrara’s outdoor booth display of the MaxxForce-powered Inferno truck, Navistar Engine Group’s MaxxForce booth # 5753 and Ferrara’s main booth #1837 can be found in the Indiana Convention Center during the FDIC show, March 24-26.

Ferrara Fire Apparatus provides a complete line of fire and emergency vehicles. In addition to the Inferno and Igniter custom chassis, Ferrara also offers the Ember and Intruder 2 custom chassis. All of Ferrara’s custom chassis feature NFPA-compliant, crash-tested cabs with 3/16” thick aluminum plate construction. Ferrara’s line-up of fire apparatus includes pumpers and tankers, rear- and mid-mount aerial ladders and platforms, rescue and incident command vehicles, Inundator industrial apparatus, and the Strong Arm fire rescue vehicle.

A leading innovator in the industry, Ferrara takes pride in offering such firefighter safety items as On-Site Tilt Table Testing for vehicle rollover protection, Complete Airbag Protection, SmartWheel steering systems, and ECE-R29 Crash Tested cabs and bodies. To date, Holden, La.-based Ferrara is the only fire apparatus manufacturer to load test its fire body to the same standard as the personnel cab. For more information, visit www.ferrarafire.com.
